As Bunyan Baptist Church, we have been loving and serving Stevenage since 1898, taking our name from the historic Christian figure John Bunyan. There have been a lot of different things going on over the years, but we just want to take a moment to say who we are today:
Our hope, dream and goal is to make Jesus known in Stevenage; that we’d all grow in our relationship with God as we experience more of His presence with us, and we’d grow as a family by welcoming new members! There’s a place for you here!
As a church family, we seek God and reach out, building a loving community that shows Jesus to people. We encourage everyone to build their relationship with Jesus through our being; our “Core Values” and our doing; our “Faith Foundations”. Our “Core Values” shapes the way we are and what we do, as we invest time in our “Faith Foundations”, those activities that help people grow in their knowledge and love of Jesus and find their place in God’s mission.
Our Core Values mean that, as Christians, individuals, and a church community we are:
1) Faithful: striving to be more like Jesus – worshipping and trusting God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
2) Loving: loving everyone the way God loves us
3) Respectful: treating all people with sensitivity and kindness
4) Generous: blessing all who we seek to serve in God’s name
5) Compassionate: Deliberately working to see God’s Kingdom come as we live in challenging, provoking, and distinctive ways.
As Christians, individuals, and a church community, our Faith Foundations are vital to our activities, as we:
1) Pray: making time to be being mindful of God’s presence as we share in communication with him
2) Bible: read, study, believe and live God’s word,
3) Serve: Following Jesus’ example, we proactively seek to serve one another, our whole family, and the wider community. anyone with generosity.
4) Share: looking for meaningful conversation, as we honestly tell others what we believe in mutual conversation
5) Gather: Meeting together as a family for services, groups, parties and more, inviting others to join in!
Our Context and Partnerships:
Located on the A1(M) just north of London, Stevenage is a fast-growing New Town of around 90,000 people. Bunyan Baptist Church is situated in the original ‘Old Town’ and welcomes people of all ages, from all backgrounds: normally around 200 on a Sunday morning, 40 on a Sunday evening, and anything from 5-55 people at our midweek groups.
We are an evangelical Baptist church, affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Central Baptist Association. We adhere to the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith, aiming to be Christ-centred and Bible-based. Our teaching and activities seek to show that God, as revealed in the Bible, is relevant to life in the 21st century, as we build up, challenge and support our church family in their faith and witness.
We are committed to working with Christians of other denominations and are part of Churches Together in Stevenage.
