BAPTISM.

As a Baptist church, we think Baptism is wonderful! Baptism is all about obedience and symbolism. Jesus asks His followers to get baptised; and in one sense that’s a good enough reason to do it… but there’s more to it than that. Baptism symbolises many of the realities of a faith in Jesus. The word “baptism” means “fully immersed”. As we get fully immersed and submerged in the water, it’s a picture of what we’re like with God: totally covered by Him. It’s a bit like a bath, which speaks of being washed clean from any bad choices we’ve made. It’s a bit like a watery grave, speaking of our submission to God, and it’s a bit like a birthing pool, speaking of the new life we find in Jesus.

Baptism is personal choice, as an outworking and consequence of faith in Jesus. Although some church traditions baptise the very young, we generally pray for our young children, with acts of dedication of thanksgiving if the family chooses, and reserve baptism for those who are making or have made a personal commitment to Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
